Did you know that July 1st is D day for the onslaught on mobile phone charges whilst travelling in Europe? EU regulations come into effect that limit what phone operators can charge you when using your mobile abroad.
For example, there is now a maximum call cost of 32p per minute and receiving a call now costs no more than 12.5p per minute. An automatic cap of £41.50 for automatic data roaming services also comes into effect today.
Using a mobile phone whilst on holiday has always been expensive, particularly when you browse the internet or, foolisly, catch up on your favourite TV program using a service such as the BBC iPlayer. In fact its surprising how many people are completely unaware of the costs of using a mobile phone abroad.
Mobile broadband services also fall into the EU regulations and a maximum cost of accessing data on a mobile or laptop has bee reduced to 65p per megabyte of uploaded or downloaded data.
So these EU enforced price reductions are very welcome, however you might have noticed that your provider has almost certainly reduced their costs for European usage already. Most have already cut their prices to below the EU stipulated charges.
