My 75 Mile Ride For Charity
I’m really into cycling as I find it the best and most enjoyable form of exercise. As I cycle around 100 miles a week, a friend and I entered a charity cycle ride with the Essex Road Cycling Club last Sunday.
There were routes of various lengths – 25, 40, 75 and 100 miles, so we decided to take on the 75 mile circuit.
Luckily the weather was perfect as it was pretty cool (about 15 degrees), dry and, mercifully there was very little wind. The organisers had also found a route without any major hills, which also helped.
There are many fantastic lanes in this part of Essex, which we cycled through on the round trip from and to Billericay in Essex. I know many of them quite well, so much of the route was familiar until we got around to the western part of Chelmsford and cycled down as far as Ongar.
I took us 4.5 hours to cover the 75 miles with our average speed at 16.6 mph which isn’t too bad. Neither of us where too bad at the end of ride, so we must both be pretty fit.
All in all it we had a great time and I think we both feel pretty proud to have completed the ride and for charity too.
My only criticism of the planning is that there was only one drinks station on the 75 mile route. Luckily we took enough water in our bottles, but we could have had problems if we’d been relying on there being more water stations along the way.
So if you feel like participating in the next charity ride organised by the Essex Road Cycling Club, then here is their website. By the way, you don’t have to be a member of the club to join the charity ride.
